Linearity Measurements of the 640 GHz SIS Mixer for JEM/SMILES

چکیده
The nonlinearity of SIS mixers is a critical issue for several new instruments which aim for high accuracy. One of them is the submillimeter wave limb emission sounder JEM/SMILES which will observe the spectral transition lines of various stratospheric trace gases. In this paper we present a perturbation technique which was used to determine the nonlinearity of its 640 SIS mixer. The measurements showed that the incremental gain compression of the mixer is about 0.7% when looking at 300 K black-body radiation.

A 665 GHz WAVEGUIDE RECEIVER USING A TUNED 0.5μm Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS TUNNEL JUNCTION
We report recent results on a 580-740 GHz SIS heterodyne receiver employing a tuned 0.50μm Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS tunnel junction. The receiver has been successfully installed at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, Hawaii. Results of an untuned device in the same waveguide block were presented at the fifth International THz Conference. Since the mixer is meant to be operated near the supercodunting ...
متن کاملInfluence of Temperature Variations on the Stability of a Submm Wave Receiver
Radio astronomy requires SIS mixers and receivers with very high stability. The goal for the total power stability of the ALMA receivers is 1x10 over 1 second. The SIS mixer is one of the most critical components in the receiver signal chain determining stability. Most changes in mixer noise and gain are due to variations of its operating conditions. In this paper we present accurate measuremen...
متن کاملA Dual-Polarized Quasi-Optical SIS Mixer at 550 GHz
In this paper, we describe the design, fabrication, and the performance of a low-noise dual-polarized quasi-optical superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixer at 550 GHz. The mixer utilizes a novel cross-slot antenna on a hyperhemispherical substrate lens, two junction tuning circuits, niobium trilayer junctions, and an IF circuit containing a lumped element 180 hybrid. The antenna con...

This paper describes an 84-116 GHz Nb/Al-oxide/Nb SIS mixer with multi-octave IF bandwidth and quantum-limited sensitivity. The mixer can be integrated with a three-stage 4-12 GHz HFET preamplifier or fitted with a coaxial connector for operation with an external isolator and IF amplifier. An 84-116 GHz receiver using the mixer with an integrated 4-12 GHz HFET preamplifier has a double sideband...
